Some things happen for a reason and photographing the music sessions of The Stirling Youth Folk Club is one of them. After having photographed one of their sessions at Nicky Tams in September 2024, ‘we’ were honoured to do it again last Monday. This time at Scotland’s Venue of the Year: The Tolbooth on Broad-Street/Jail-Wynd in Stirling. So the Stirling Youth Folk Club is not just literally moving up the hill, but figuratively as well!
I recently had a similar experience with covering the jubilee session of the In The Attic Live Music Festival in my home town Heino as well. The local pub where they have organised their event for over 15 years now, wanted them to move to one of their new venues, just out of town. This opened new doors and the organising committee have now settled for the more professional, volunteer run, Theater Heino and the proceeds from the drinks now go to In The Attic themselves. I am pretty sure that the Tolbooth will be happy with their proceeds as well on this Monday night.
Anyway like I said, some things happen for a reason and when I bumped into one of the musicians on the train from Stirling to Edinburgh, to visit the Christmas market, we agreed that I would cover it again in the new year, not knowing then that it would be at the new venue.
Stirling Youth Folk music session Tolbooth’s café bar
The area at the Tolbooth bar is a bit larger than the one at Nicky Tams, so that helped me a bit to move around. The lighting conditions were a stop brighter but still challenging, with weird changes in colour temperature. But that’s the nice thing about doing things like this, there is no commercial pressure, you don’t have to be in control and simply take things as it comes. Fully aligned with the play and discover ethos of the club!
It was a joy again I am looking forward to hear and see more sessions in the future!
